Chapter 4, Mishna 1:

Ben Zoma said: Who is wise? One who learns from every person, as it is said: From all of my teachers I have become wise; indeed Your testimonies are my conversation.

Who is a hero? One who can conquer his [evil] inclination, as it is said: It is better to be slow to anger than to be strong, and one who controls his passions is better than one who conquers a city.

Who is rich? One who is satisfied with what he has, as it is said: When you eat of your handiwork [physical work], you are happy and well satisfied. Happy in this world, and saitsfied in the next world.

Who is an honored person? One who honors others, as it is said: I will honor those who honor me, and those who despise me will be degraded.
