Exceptions to the Fifth Commandment

2026 Views     0 Ratings
Miss Stephanie Wolf is currently a junior Engineering student at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She has triplet brothers Ben and Jake, and is originally from Madison, Wisconsin. Although she has always considered herself to be Jewish, she never took time to question or wonder about Judaism. This changed last winter when she traveled with Chabad on Birthright to Israel. After returning from Israel, she made it a goal to pursue learning more about Judaism. Sinai Scholars allowed her to challenge herself and really see how each commandment is directly related to her daily life.

Stephanie's Paper focuses on the exceptions to the 5th commandment. She begins by telling a personal story when she had to decide whether or not to honor her father. This essential commandment has many different nuances that require attention and consideration in applying it to diverse everyday life. Her point is to demonstrate how this commandment directly impacts our lives in today's society and the Jewish thought and rationale behind the various details associated with this commandment.

This presentation was delivered at the Sinai Scholars Academic Symposium 2011.
The Sinai Scholars Symposium is a yearly conference for university students, hosted by the Sinai Scholars Society.  Students from around the world gather with an esteemed panel of Ivy League professors, world-class Torah scholars and experts in their field to study, discuss and present their thoughts on various subjects that deal with Judaism and the modern world.  Each student prepares an academic paper which they present to their colleagues and a panel of judges.
