Where Medicine Differs

Rapidly evolving social philosophies and ethical trends have a significant impact on the way doctors practice. Ethical standards appear to be flexible and a reflection of the mores of the times. Nonetheless, a common perception persists, that medicine is grounded in timeless, lofty values consistent with high moral purpose. This session will explore the attribute of rachamim (compassion) as developed in the literature of the Kabbalah, and postulate the following: as an underlying ethical constant, it is immutable, especially applicable to physicians, and, as an absolute, can never be fully achieved.
