The decree of the Cantonists during the reign of Czar Nikolai I of Russia (1825-1855), where young Jewish boys were taken from their parents and drafted into the Czar's army for 25 years and made to convert to Christianity, was a dark point in Jewish History. Rabbi Vigler goes through a Ma'amer (Chassidic discourse) of the Mitteler Rebbe, the 2nd Chabad Rebbe and son of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liad, from 1827 which asks vital questions on the purpose of a Jew even when he has no ability to perform Torah and Mitzvot, as was the case with the Cantonists.
