SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, was founded in November of 1984, and began operation in February of 1985.  They are looking for evidence of life in the universe by seeking out signs of technology.  Some people think that if life is found on another planet, that would spell the end of organized religion.  What is Judaism's take on the matter?  Rabbi Pinchas Taylor quotes sources as diverse as astronaut Gordon Cooper, former President Jimmy Carter, numerous Talmudic tractates, the anthropic principle, Rabbi Chasdai Crescas, Rabbi Joseph Albo, Professor Velvel Greene, and the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to lead us to a conclusion with a practical application.

"When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have established; what is man that You should recall him and the son of man that You should think of him?  And yet, You have made him just a little below the angels, and have crowned him with glory and honor.  You made him ruler over the works of Your hands and You put everything under his feet," Psalms 8:4-7).
