Jewish Ethics in a Post-modern World

2449 Views     2 Ratings
Mr. Adam Cohen is currently in the graduate program at the University of Central Florida studying history with a focus on Judaism in Late Antiquity.  He participated in Sinai Scholars this past Fall to help prepare him for his upcoming thesis work.  While Adam is not a conservative or orthodox Jew by any means, he deeply values his heritage and is always seeking to learn more about it.  He is hoping to obtain a PhD and teach Judaic history at a university level when his studies are completed.

Adam’s paper, “Why we Inscribe Them on the Doorposts of our House and Upon our Gates” briefly deals with a prominent issue in today’s society, internet censorship, and the controversies regarding how to deal with it in its various forms.  Just a glance at some of the leading Jewish literature over the ages shows that Judaism has means of confronting these issues that show that Jewish ethics and laws are invaluable and timeless, no matter when you look at them.

This presentation was delivered at the Sinai Scholars Academic Symposium 2011.
The Sinai Scholars Symposium is a yearly conference for university students, hosted by the Sinai Scholars Society.  Students from around the world gather with an esteemed panel of Ivy League professors, world-class Torah scholars and experts in their field to study, discuss and present their thoughts on various subjects that deal with Judaism and the modern world.  Each student prepares an academic paper which they present to their colleagues and a panel of judges.
