Eric Ivan Cantor is a former Republican US Representative from Virginia, serving since 2001. He was also the House Majority Leader from 2011 until the middle of 2014.
Cantor is the highest-ranking Jewish member of Congress in its history. The second of three children, Cantor was born in Richmond, VA, the son of Mary Lee (née Hudes), a schoolteacher, and Eddie Cantor, who owned a real estate firm. His family emigrated from Eastern Europe (Russia, Romania, and Latvia) in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
