This coming week, we will begin one of the most dramatic periods of the Jewish calendar: The month of Elul. This is the final month of the Hebrew year and a time for “spiritual stocktaking” when we review our growth during the past year. This awareness of our spiritual state prepares us for the annual crowning of G-d as our King on Rosh Hashana. Chassidut refers to Elul, as a time when “The King is in the field.” A king generally resides in his palace and gaining an audience with him is not an easy task. One must go through channels of bureaucracy, prepare their words meticulously and refine their appearance before being allowed access to his throne. However, there are times when a king comes out to the field to interact with his people as they live their day-to-day, ordinary lives. For G-d and His people, Elul is this time.
Wishing you peace and prosperity in the coming month of Elul,
