The Masquerading Jew

Did you ever wonder why Judaism places so much emphasis on dressing up for Purim? In this short talk, Rabbi Yossi Paltiel explains the deeper meaning behind the holiday of costumes and masquerades.

Ultimately, the reason we dress up is to make the point that things are never as they seem. On a surface level, the plot of the Purim story reads like a bad joke. The enemies of the Jews are strong and empowered, they clearly have the upper hand for the majority of the megillah. But at the end of the day, not only were our enemies climactically defeated, but every plan they set in motion turned on them in endless irony. When all of the morbid details come together we realize that the total story is meticulously orchestrated by G-d, the master of masquerades.
