The Jewish Identity Crisis

998 Views     3 Ratings

Over the past half-century there has been a growing concern with and attention to the issue of “Jewish identity.” While there have been many attempts to define this idea, the Torah offers a basic definition but at the very least, Jewish identity consists of the act of claiming to be part of the Jewish community. It can further be broken into three main views: ancestral, religious, and cultural, through the human ecology theory. Upon interviewing some fellow Birthright participants, staff, and students, both American and Israeli, it appears that it does not matter who one is or where one comes from; being Jewish, which ever way that may be, is what connects all Jews to each other. While there is hardly one identifier with which people associate when it comes to being Jewish, the human ecology theory emphasizes the significance of Jewishness as a whole.Ultimately, Jewishness cannot be reduced to membership in any one specific category; Jewish identity is all encompassing.
