Morality and Advertising

Nora Ellison is a senior at Stern College for Women, majoring in Judaic studies and minoring in psychology. She grew up in California and currently resides in New York. Over the span of 4 years she spent 3 in Israel, doing Shirut Leumi, attending EVO an art Seminary, and Mayanot Institute in Jerusalem. She aspires to go into the field of Jewish education and psychology.

Nora's paper addresses the sensitive moral dilemma within advertising. Through making associations, advertising creates desires within an individual and makes illusionary promises that can not be fulfilled; like happiness, friendship, and love. Although advertising is a fairly modern phenomenon, it is still possible to draw upon classical halachic sources to analyze the direction and attitude with which Jewish law might confront it.

This presentation was delivered at the Sinai Scholars Academic Symposium 2013.
The Sinai Scholars Symposium is a yearly conference for university students, hosted by the Sinai Scholars Society.  Students from around the world gather with an esteemed panel of Ivy League professors, world-class Torah scholars and experts in their field to study, discuss and present their thoughts on various subjects that deal with Judaism and the modern world.  Each student prepares an academic paper which they present to their colleagues and a panel of judges.
