Arguments for the Existence of G-d and Their Logical Conclusions

Brad Tenenholtz is a junior attending Indiana University and is from Cincinnati, OH. He is majoring in Informatics, the business aspect of computer science. He is a brother of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity and is working toward a career in technology solutions and systems administration. With the help of a close relative, he has studied a select few issues within religious philosophy and hopes that his knowledge and insight will be a benefit to the Symposium.

Brad's paper relates how despite four thousand years of discussion, humanity has been unable to prove or disprove the idea of a G-d. In this paper, he attempts to show that argumentation for G-d’s existence has not been time wasted, but has provided us with knowledge that has been largely ignored. With these premises, Brad will then present a thought experiment called the “Layman’s G-d” and show how it can be used to refocus the debate regarding the logical proofs for G-d’s existence in a bit-by-bit mindset, as opposed to one, all-encompassing proof. He explores the similarities between the Layman’s G-d and the Jewish G-d and determines whether by proving one we have inherently proved the other. The goal of this paper is to show that good has come from attempts to prove the existence of G-d, and to show that religious philosophy has not been stuck in the same cycles of proof-disproof for the duration of its existence. Whether or not the existence of the Jewish G-d can be determined, we have found valuable knowledge by simply asking the question.

This presentation was delivered at the Sinai Scholars Academic Symposium 2012.
The Sinai Scholars Symposium is a yearly conference for university students, hosted by the Sinai Scholars Society.  Students from around the world gather with an esteemed panel of Ivy League professors, world-class Torah scholars and experts in their field to study, discuss and present their thoughts on various subjects that deal with Judaism and the modern world.  Each student prepares an academic paper which they present to their colleagues and a panel of judges.
